We ordered the Beeler’s Pork Shoulder and Manila Clams, the Seared Dayboat Scallops with Brussels sprouts and cauliflower puree, the Gulf Shrimp with tasso ham, chili sauce, and grits, the Mac n Cheese with prosciutto, bleu cheese, cheddar, and parmesan, and the Lamb and Beef Kabobs with minted yogurt. The pork shoulder and the clams was very tasty and I really liked the potatoes that came with it. The dish was almost perfect except I wished that there were more clams. The seared scallops were pretty good but I would have liked a better sear on the scallops. I did like the Mac n Cheese. It was creamy without being heavy and you could definitely taste the parmesan. I honestly didn’t like the kabobs but honestly I’m not a lamb person. This was my first time eating shrimp and grits and I was not disappointed. It was the perfect flavors and textures. I would order all of these items again, with the exception of the kabobs. The kabobs just aren’t very tasty and even if you like lamb, they could have had more flavor and been served with more yogurt. We also ordered a creme brulee which was excellent.

So you may be wondering if the food was pretty good, why did I give this place 3 stars? One reason is that while the food was generally good, there was still plenty of room for improvement. Another reason is that the service was a bit off. I understand the restaurant was busy but our waiter told everyone around us the specials but didn’t tell them to us. Also, he was very attentive to the tables around us but for some reason we really had to flag him down when we needed something. I’m not going to name him because I’m not trying to get anybody fired. I just was slightly frustrated that he wasn’t very attentive.

That being said, overally Hock Farm is a good farm to fork restaurant in a great location with plenty of seating, a trendy vibe, and pretty tasty food. If they make sure that all their servers are attentive and tweak some of the food slightly (better sear on the scallops, more yogurt served with the lamb kabobs, etc) then I’d be a happy camper. I would like to to wait a little bit and then give this place another shot. If the service is better or they tweak the food a bit, I’ll consider upping my rating to 4 stars.
